“You attract what you reflect” this was advice Sina Port gave in our interview when explaining how to build your personal brand.
The idea is simple. Don’t be afraid to share the values and the impact you want to have. This will help you attract opportunities in line with those values. You haven’t found your audience because you haven’t reflected out the right message yet.
A lot of people are stuck doing nothing because their circumstances don’t look like what they envision success to look like. Here’s what I mean by that. Let’s say I set out to be a thought leader in the marketing space, and for me success looks like getting invited to conferences and podcasts to share marketing best practices. There’s often a big gap between when you make the intention or set the goal and the outcomes actually happening. Where people get lost is in the middle of these two ends of the journey.
If you want to achieve certain outcomes, it’s not enough to simply want it. You have to take action to get to those goals. If I’m not getting invited to speak, I can create blog posts, YouTube videos, Instagram posts, etc. there’s a number of actions that you can take to start establishing yourself as someone that has an opinion worth listening to in the space. You have to reflect out your values, your ideas, your expertise into the world before you can start attracting opportunity.
If you want to be an expert in a space, go do what you what you want to teach others. Become one of the best in the space and then help others replicate your results. You don’t become an expert without proof that you can do what you say you can do.
If you’re earlier on in the journey and don’t necessarily want to be an expert, no problem, you can position yourself as a curious explorer who tries new things and shares back their learnings. Many founders nowadays make it a priority to document their journey on social media so they can build a tribe of people that are interested in the work they’re doing.
Point is, you don’t make progress requires action. Start putting content into the world that aligns with your passions, your values, your interests and doors will start opening.
