Too Many Interests

The feedback that you often get when starting a personal brand is to ask yourself what you want to be known for. But what if you don’t know what you want to be known for? What if you’re genuinely interested in more than one thing? Can you be known for multiple things? This is the dilemma I have faced for a while now. One exercise I’ve found that helps narrow down your focus is to set a daily writing goal and stick to it for a month or so. At the end of the month go back through your writing and see the topics you wrote most about. Is that something that you want to continue to learn and grow in? If the answer is yes then start there. The second concern is that is it possible to be known for more than one thing? And the answer is yes, but you have to be known for one thing first. You need to develop trust with your customer before you tell them all the different things you do. If you tell them everything you are capable of doing in the beginning, you risk confusing the customer. Once they trust you, its easier to say hey I also do this. Or hey, i no longer am doing X and I’m pivoting the business to focus on Y. Gary Vaynerchuk was known as the wine guy, then he pivoted and was known as the social media marketing guy and now I’m not even sure what he is known for. He wears so many hats and is involved in so many things that its hard to keep up.
